Jeff and all,

I don=E2=80=99t know if I responded to any emails. Please forgive =
me if I didn=E2=80=99t. Those who know me will agree I have a tendency for =
being a bonehead at times. Forgetting things. But
let me say to all, Dave was as good a teammate and even better person that=
I have had privilege to know. I remember the day of his passing. I cried f=
or two days. Same with Coach Boo.

Dave and I stayed in touch as best we could after ND and saw him a=
fter Vikings Bears games when they kicked our butts. Then, in USFL when he =
played for Showboats? Then in Naperville
where he worked later. Though he was from south quad, we always bonded. He=
was road roommate freshman year and taunted me that he caught a pass in a =
game before I did. True. But later said, you caught the one that counted. A=
s you can see above attachments,
he was first to get to me and not only was happy about comeback, I think h=
e was happy for me. Looked like he protected me from everyone else. I was s=
o proud for him to be part of my lucky catch. He deserved to be in Cotton B=
owl HOF more than I did. Coach Boo
always kept me under his wing and although not my position coach, I loved =
him as much as anyone.

God bless both and shall always remember Dave=E2=80=99s intimidati=
ng red elbow pads and Coach Boulac=E2=80=99s bark which was certainly worse=
than his bite. Coach Boulac always loved David
so much and I think they are talking about line techniques now. Mickey, I =
am still looking for Germany pic and I will send, have not forgot. Lo=
ve you forever David and Coach Boo.

Subject: Re: Remembering #56... 2020 Dillon & friends

Thank you all for sharing such precious memories and photos of Dav=
id. I have so many memories but two special ones to share, one brings a smi=
le and the second tears.

The first year David was at ND, we invited him and a few teammates=
over for dinner. Being from Texas, he was a long way from home and I=
liked to provide some comfort food and hugs for our
"sons". I made two large pans of chicken enchiladas (recip=
e from our time in San Antonio) and (fortunately) other side dishes - buffe=
ts were in at our house.... David came in, picked up one of the pans of enc=
hiladas and proceeded to devour it. We all
watched with amazement and, for future visits, I made one pan just for Dav=
id and a couple more so everyone had a fair share. Our girls loved their &q=
uot;brothers" and David was a favorite.

On the evening of November 21, 1998, we had a gathering at our hom=
e celebrating an exciting victory (over LSU I believe) anticipating David w=
ould be stopping by after the game. When the
phone rang informing us of the accident and with the news that David was g=
one, the celebration ceased and the tears fell. The life of this wonderful,=
vibrant man so loved by all of us had ended in a tragic accident.

Coach Bou loved all of his players but some, like David - bigger t=
han life - inspired so many stories. We had visited with David in Pho=
enix after the Fiesta Bowl (at a Mexican restaurant
of course). Those have always been such joyous times when we can spe=
nd time with all of you, meet your families and revel in the men you have b=
ecome.

A little bit of our hearts are up in heaven with those who have le=
ft us way too soon. Now Coach Bou is up there with David. We thought =
we heard them during the Clemson game challenging
the team to victory with those voices you may still remember.

You are all in our thoughts and prayers for your health and safety=
in these perilous times. Wishing you a special holiday season creating mem=
ories with limitations but ingenuity.

Good morning Men and Priests of Dillon Hall, a universe of friends, a=
nd Dave=E2=80=99s teammates--

It has become a ritual that I send-out this annual remembrance of Dav=
e Huffman=E2=80=99s passing on Saturday, November 21, 1998.

This is
the 22nd anniversary of Dave=E2=80=99s death.</=
span>

Dave was a great friend to all of us in Dillon and students across ca=
mpus, a favorite of Priests and professors, a Consensus All-American on the=
1977 National Championship team=E2=80=A6and
someone we will not forget. And for those who did not have the privilege t=
o know Dave directly, his life and story were big.

For the milestones and memories we have enjoyed in these past 22-year=
s, Dave has not been with us to share and celebrate.

There were also other memorable players and friends from Dave=E2=80=
=99s ND era who have passed--Willie Fry, Mike Calhoun, Ted Burgmeier, Steve=
Schmitz, Dave Duerson...

And notably on June 4 this year, legendary ND coach Brian (Bou) Boula=
c passed away. Coach Bou was the Offensive Line coach for some of the best =
lines in ND history. Ask our friends
what they thought of Coach Bou--players like: Ernie Hughes, Teddy Horansky=
, Timmy Huffman, John Scully and Kevin Hart. Beyond a great coach, Co=
ach Bou could be a =E2=80=9Csecond father=E2=80=9D to some of the players. =
Dave said that many times. Their mutual affection was
obvious. Coach Boulac said to me a few years ago at O=E2=80=99Rourke=
=E2=80=99s that he thought Dave Huffman began the tradition of great Center=
s at Notre Dame. Hard to say if that was true, but you=E2=80=99d have to re=
spect Coach Bou=E2=80=99s opinion=E2=80=A6 so I=E2=80=99m going with it. &n=
bsp;

And of course, there have been other great ND classmates and friends =
no longer with us. We remember them, as well.

As we head into the Thanksgiving holiday, this always seems to be a g=
ood time of the year to reflect upon on the memories and friendship for tho=
se we have lost.

Today is especially for our pal Dave Huffman.

But while sad in so many ways=E2=80=A6 memories of Dave also bring so=
many smiles.

Speaking of the 1977 Cotton Bowl, I had the privilege to sit for a fe=
w minutes with Roger Valdiserri at Rocco=E2=80=99s Pizza last year (2019) j=
ust before the Navy game.

Roger was as sharp as can be. He had get memories of Dave Huffman, es=
pecially at the =E2=80=9977 Cotton Bowl pre-game Media Day event. When a re=
porter asked Dave the biggest difference between
Texas and Notre Dame players, Dave answered, =E2=80=9CWell sir, Notre Dame=

It is very hard to believe that the years are passing so quickly=E2=

icago back to campus on that sad Saturday morning
to meet many of us for the ND-LSU game that day. He did not make it to our=
tailgater or to the game. There has been a void since.
